Week 3 Assignment #4 Understanding Metonymy and Metaphor

  • What is metaphor? Give example from the reading. A metaphor is a "word or phrase used in a sense other than that which is proper to it." An example from the reading would be


  • What is metonymy? give example from the reading. A metonymy is a "word or phrase denoting an object, action, institution etc." An example from the reading would be, the women's and men's restroom signs.


  • How did you apply the concepts of metaphor or metonymy? How well did you apply them? Give an example from your presentation of information. I was unaware that we were supposed to use a metaphor or metonymy in my presentation since it did not state it in the directions given with the assignment about creating the presentation. However, I could have a used a metonymy on slide 7 where I say 'she fights for her rights' instead I could have said she is always whiling to lend a hand (hand means help)
