Introduction

About Me
I was born and raised in Tucker County, WV. I am currently living in Nutter Fort, WV and working at Norwood Elementary in Stonewood as a full time substitute in Physical Education and Music, which came as quit a surprise, since my degree is K-6 and I only had one class for both PE and Music while completing my undergrad, but it has been a great year and I have grown so as a teacher already! I am working toward receiving my Masters in Professional Studies at Fairmont State University. Within this class I would really like to learn new and interesting techniques with technology to teach my students when I have my own classroom.

Classes Taken in the Graduate Program:
Educ 6300: Foundations of American-Online
Educ 6306: Education Evaluation-Online
Educ 6301: Research in Education-Online
Educ 6305: Advanced Education Tech and Media-Online

LITERACY  We hear and use it almost every day yet we seem to be stumped each time we are asked to define it. People differ on what literacy means to them and is very hard to find a unified definition.

  1. It is odd how sometimes life takes us in a direction we weren't expecting. I really like your teacher quote in your "About Me" section. I agree with you about Literacy. It is an "umbrella" term that can be placed in several different categories.

  2. I was wondering by this comment “Within this class I would really like to learn new and interesting techniques with technology to teach my students when I have my own classroom” if you currently have your own classroom?

  3. Hi Ashley! Welcome! I can tell just by your layout that you are an engaging and energetic teacher .. you obviously make learning *fun* !!! I try to do the same with my students; how can we expect them to pay any attention if we stand up, lecture, and drone on?

Looking forward to your input in class! Good luck!

  4. I had the same thing happen to me! I got a degree in Teaching Secondary English and ended up in a long term sub position as an 8th grade math teacher. Wow! That was hard! Learned a lot though and it did help me become a better teacher!

  5. Ashley,
Welcome to 6809! I feel you have this "blog" thing figured out and I love your font and presentation. It is so eye-catching and appropriate for an elementary teacher. Best of luck this summer semester. I hope you obtain some effective uses of teaching in the digital media age!

  7. Hi Ashley,
I could NEVER teach PE classes! I have more energy than needed for one human being but my competitive nature probably wouldn't work well in a gym class! I admire elementary teachers also (even though I have a k-6 undergrad and taught sixth grade) because after I began working in high school, I found my personality was better suited for 15-18 year olds :) Have a great summer!

  8. In reference to the unexpected that helps us grow.... I have taught Art for 2 years at the middle school level and love it! It is my subject area, so I am very blessed to have been lucky in finding jobs in WV. I did substitute for one year in a myriad of classrooms and subjects, but scored a 3 month long term sub position in what used to be called "Family and Consumer Sciences." I felt way out of my depth, but the school was desperate for coverage, so I gave it my best. It ended up being a very rewarding 3 months where I taught the kids how to cook some, discussed leaderships skills and responsibility, and careers. I was allowed to be fairly open-ended with my content, because I wanted to touch a lot of subjects relevant to the class. It shaped my future classroom for the better, and I use some of the techniques and discussions today in my art classes. You never know what will help you down the line. Every experience broadens how you handle those to come. Glad you got a full-time gig!!!

  9. Ashley-
I know all about teaching out of field! I taught special education last year and my degree is only Elem. Ed. k-6 as well! It was quite a shock and quite a challenge but like you, I learned to love it! I hope (if it is what you are wanting) that you are able to find a full time position in your field! I think once you get in your field, you'll be even happier! I know I was! Good luck this semester!

  10. Hi Ashley,
I understand your statement about learning a lot in your first year of teaching. I kind of felt like it was a crash course with no safety net when I first started. Luckily, there are some great resources that you can/have used with your music and physical education classes such as pinterest and youtube. I hope you enjoy all your classes for your graduate degree and learn as much as you can. :)

  11. That must have been a wild first year of PE and Music. It's funny how our first jobs make us wish that we'd only just taken some more classes in... fill in the blank. The cartoon you choose is SO REAL. Heaven help us.
